[eBook] Navigating Agentic and Generative AI in Software Development

AI is now embedded throughout the software development lifecycle (SDLC). In a 2025 survey of 550 organisations conducted by CIO Dive, KPMG, and OutSystems, 99% reported integrating AI into their SDLC activities.

AI adoption is accelerating across development teams

One-third of organisations are using AI for application generation. Over one-third of surveyed executives report adopting AI for this purpose, with 69% indicating improved developer productivity. A further 68% say AI enhances software quality and reduces defects, while 62% report greater scalability in development efforts—driven by effective collaboration between humans and machines.

Despite this progress, AI is frequently implemented in isolated environments. This siloed approach leads to fragmented workflows, governance gaps, and added complexity, limiting the potential of true human–AI collaboration.

A new perspective

This joint report from CIO Dive, KPMG, and OutSystems examines both the advantages and risks of adopting agentic AI and generative AI in software development. It also highlights how organisations are managing the evolving dynamics of human and machine collaboration.

Download the report to discover why:

  • The AI use cases delivering the highest business value are also the most widely adopted in software development.

  • Agentic AI addresses scaling challenges while improving customer experiences and boosting productivity.

  • Strong guardrails and access controls help manage data privacy and security, enabling responsible human–AI collaboration.

  • A unified platform approach reduces silos and AI sprawl while supporting effective human–AI collaboration systems.
